Painted Ladies (or Gents)

Pick up any interior design magazine and it seems painted and distressed furniture is making a big comeback. (It never went anywhere in my world). In particular, a two page spread in the March issue of House Beautiful. Check out those prices! There is something very soulful, grounded, and unpretentious about painted furniture. It looks as if it's been passed down through generations of use, if not loving care. Whether it's called Wabi-Sabi, Old English, or French Country, the look is homey, comfortable, and easy to live with. An added scratch, bump, or accidental spill just adds to the beauty and realism of the piece. Great for kids and dogs, lol.
Lately, I've become addicted to Craig's List furniture section. If you look past all the misinformation, misspellings, and such, there are great bargains to be had on antique and retro furniture. Even the scariest dark Victorian furniture can be painted and refreshed. Try buying real wood these days, much less, anything that will hold up as long as these pieces have over the years. Oops, gave away another great source-see my last post for other options finding great stuff cheap. A little paint and creativity and you've transformed an inexpensive cast-off into a treasure.

Newly purchased or custom made pieces can take on a centuries old patina with the proper technique. My current project is a cabinet designed for the end of a bed which holds a flat screen TV. Push the remote and the "antique blanket chest" opens up as the screen rises to the perfect viewing height. The perfect disguise!

If any of these ramblings piqued your interest in painted furniture, pick up a few magazines, find the perfect piece and take a creative leap. Oh yeah, we have a furniture class coming in April, lol.
